Population in Colombia
The total population in Colombia was last recorded at 47.7 million people in 2014 from 16.0 million in 1960, changing 198 percent during the last 50 years. Population in Colombia averaged 31.85 Million from 1960 until 2014, reaching an all time high of 47.66 Million in 2014 and a record low of 16.01 Million in 1960.
The population is descended from three racial groups--Indians, blacks, and whites--that have mingled throughout the nearly 500 years of the country's history. No official figures were available, but according to rough estimates in the late 1980s, mestizos (white-Indian mix) constituted approximately 50 percent of the population, whites 25 percent, mulattoes (black-white mix) and zambos (black-Indian mix) 20 percent, blacks 4 percent, and Indians 1 percent.
Most Colombians continued to identify themselves and others according to ancestry, physical appearance, and sociocultural status. Social relations reflected the importance attached to certain characteristics associated with a given racial group. Although these characteristics no longer accurately demarcated distinct social categories, they still helped determine rank in the social hierarchy.
The Colombian upper class largely consists of a wealthy white elite, some of whom trace their lineage to the aristocracy of the colonial era. The wealth of this elite is based largely on the ownership of land and property. The upper class also includes a group of people whose wealth is more recent; these people have accumulated wealth through commercial and entrepreneurial activities.
The middle class has grown as a result of industrialization and economic diversification in the 20th century. Historically the middle class was largely made up of those who had fallen from the aristocracy through loss of wealth and property. During the 20th century, the middle class grew to include people who rose from the lower class by succeeding in business. Groups that are regarded as middle class include small-business people, merchants, professionals, bureaucrats and government workers, professors and teachers, and white-collar workers.
This factor is very important for our business, because we need to hire people from different places, and we as a company need to know what are their needs and their behaviors.
